How I Write Songs

I love writing songs but I must say that I’m still no expert with it.

How It Started

Back in college, I had a band. We used to play at a local bar and my proudest moment was when we performed as an opening act to Barbie Almalbis who is one of my favorite Filipina artists. One day, I just decided to quit. Why? Well, besides the fact that my father was so strict that I was always struggling to ask permission playing gigs very late at night, I got tired playing cover songs. I just thought as a band, we must have original songs. The problem is, I couldn’t write. My lyrics were either corny or shallow. I just didn’t have confidence. Then, inspiration came. My heart was broken and there were just too many thoughts playing in my head that I turned them into songs. I didn’t record them though. Hehe.

The Writing Process

It’s really easier to write songs when you’re thinking of someone who you can dedicate the song to. It’s like you’re writing them a letter but you’re also singing it. You can also place yourself to someone’s situation and sing in their point-of-view. Sometimes, a set of melodies just play in my head with empty lyrics then I’ll just think of words that will fit into them. Another way is playing a guitar riff, hum melodies then think of the words later.

Here’s an example:

I wrote this song for my boyfriend as an anniversary gift. I think the first lyrics that I came up with were “Oooh…hoo…hoo”. πŸ™‚ Haha. True story. Then, I just want to describe what or how he is in my life. So, I really planned on making each line start with “you are…”Β  and most of them are metaphors.

You are the song that my heart keeps singing
You are the sunshine in my sky
I know you are the ending to my story
You are the love of my life
You are my only one and you are my everything (notice the oxymoron? Yes, I’m an English teacher)

(Ooh hoo hoo…) You’re the best dream I have that came true
(Ooh hoo hoo…) The one who makes me smile when I am blue
(Ooh hoo hoo…) You are mine and I belong to you

You are the light when darkness surrounds me
You are the stars in my night
You are my shelter when I get lost and lonely
You are my infinity
Maybe you are my strength but you are my kryptonite (Oxymoron again. πŸ™‚ )

(Ooh hoo hoo…) You’re the best dream I have that came true
(Ooh hoo hoo…) The one who makes me smile when I am blue
(Ooh hoo hoo…) You’re the color to my world/The color to my universe
(Ooh hoo hoo…) You are mine and I belong to you

You are my bestfriend and you are my shooting star
You are my man and you are the only one
There’s no one else for me ’cause you are…

As I try to finish the whole song, new ideas come up– some lyrics are changed, some ad libs are added and some parts are omitted. It’s always a great feeling when I’m already listening to the finished product. Not all people might like what I write but I just need to focus on my inspiration. If we will think of the people who we are writing to, words will overflow and we will be satisfied because it came from the heart. πŸ™‚

How about you? Where do you get your inspiration in writing?
