Last Friday, my hubby and I watched The Martian starring Matt Damon. The film is about a NASA astronaut named Mark Watney who was part of a manned mission to Mars. After a fierce storm, Mark was presumed dead by his crew and was left stranded on the red planet.
The movie contains a lot of Science facts and is very educational but we can also gain some life lessons from it. Here’s what I’ve learned.
1. It’s okay to freak out but don’t waste your time freaking out.
2. don’t be afraid to take risks.
Life is full of trials and errors. Most of the time you’ll fail. But the more you make mistakes, the more you learn. As Mark Watney said, “I guess you could call it a”failure”, but I prefer the term “learning experience”.”
3. music is essential to life.
Mark had no choice but to listen to disco music but it would have been lonelier without it.
4. Put your knowledge to use.
They say Botany is not real Science but it actually saved Mark’s life. 🙂 Your skills and talents are important, too. Don’t waste them. Application of knowledge is helpful in any way.
5. It’s always good to have an outlet of your thoughts and emotions.
The film reminds me of Cast Away because it’s also about a man who was stuck alone. The difference is, the man from Cast Away created a friend through Wilson, the volleyball. Mark in this film, however, created a relationship with the cameras. Without anyone or anything to express ourselves to, we’ll go crazy. It feels better to have someone to talk to with what we go through.
6. Plan ahead.
Be prepared in anything. Save your resources. Always have a Plan B.
7. Be resourceful.
Learn to improvise. Everything has a solution. We just have to look around.
8. Trust is a must.
You need to believe in yourself that you can do it. As I’ve said in number 2, it’s okay to make mistakes. If you don’t give up, you’ll be successful. But trust other people, too. You have to believe that people care about you and are willing to help you. We don’t know everything. We can’t do everything. Chances are, we need their help so we need to trust them.
9. Having sense of humor is important.
I was so entertained with the film because of Mark’s sense of humor. In real life, we need that, too. We need to laugh. Life can be funny sometimes, you know. Haha.
10. Be optimistic.
Don’t lose hope. Sometimes, problems are not solved in an instant but that time will still come. You’ll be saved and you’ll never be alone again.
I encourage you to watch The Martian. It’s funny and enthralling. 🙂
Have you seen the movie? What other life lessons have you learned? Do you think you can survive if you have been stuck alone on Mars?
